This article describes how you can manage licenses for the Apple apps that your organization has purchased through Apple Business Manager.
Administrators can see the licenses in Miradore and assign purchased licenses to users and/or devices. After licenses have been assigned, administrators can deploy purchased apps to managed iOS or macOS devices.
When you have purchased licenses from Apple Business Manager you'll need to update license data to Miradore.
1. Navigate to Management > Applications where you can see the current list of apps that are ready for deployment. When your Apple Business Manager account has been configured, click the Apple VPP > Update applications button from top of the page.
2. Press Update applications to download license data from Apple Business Manager. All your application and license purchases are updated to your Miradore site.
3. In the last screen of the wizard, you'll see a notification which tells you whether the licenses were successfully updated. You may exit the wizard by clicking Close.
The application list is refreshed based on the received license data. Your company-licensed applications with the type App Store (VPP) are added to the list automatically. Press Select columns, select the VPP licenses column and press Apply to see the current license status.
Now you're ready to start managing your VPP licenses. Double-click an application or click the Open icon from the right to open the VPP application page.
In the Settings tab, you can see the general settings from the application. The most important setting considering VPP deployment is VPP license assignment. This setting defines whether licenses are assigned manually before installation or automatically during deployment.
The possible values are:
Manually: Administrators need to assign licenses before installation. If a device has no valid license for application, the deployment will fail with the error message License for app x could not be found.
Automatically to user when application is deployed: The next free license from the license pool is assigned automatically to the device's responsible person if he/she has registered to VPP.
Automatically to device when application is deployed: The next free license from the license pool is assigned automatically to the device by its serial number. This is the default setting for VPP.
Please notice, that licenses can only be assigned to devices that are running iOS 9 or later. If your devices are running iOS 7 or 8, you need to change this or assign licenses manually to users before deployment. Otherwise, application deployment will fail with reason "The iTunes Store ID of the application could not be validated."
In the VPP licenses tab, you can see the general license statistics for the application and where licenses have been assigned.
Administrators can start the Assign VPP license action from the page action menu to manually assign licenses to devices or registered users.
Clicking the trashcan icon removes a license from a device or user, depending on the assignment type. When a license is removed, the status is changed to Available and the license can be re-assigned to another user or device.
If all application licenses have been used, administrators can start Purchase VPP licenses from the page action menu to go directly to the application page in the VPP portal. In addition the following notification is displayed.
The VPP licenses tab on the device page shows what company-licensed applications are ready to be installed on the device.
The Assigned licenses table shows licenses that are assigned to the device by its serial number.
The Available licenses from App Store user table shows licenses that are available to the active/logged-in App Store account of the device, and thus ready to be installed to the device.
Administrators can start the Assign VPP license action from the page action menu to manually assign licenses to the device. Clicking the trashcan icon removes a license from the device. When a device is deleted all the licenses assigned to it are removed and available to be re-assigned.
The VPP account tab on the user page shows information about the users VPP account and assigned licenses.
The Account details table shows VPP account information.
The Assigned licenses table shows VPP licenses assigned to the registered user.
If user is registered, administrators can start the Assign VPP license action from the page action menu to manually assign licenses to the user. Clicking the trashcan icon removes a license from the user. In addition, administrators can send a VPP invitation to the user or remove the user from VPP if needed. When the user is deleted or removed from VPP, all the assigned licenses are removed and available to be re-assigned.
After the licenses have been assigned either manually or by setting assignment type to automatic, applications can be installed to the devices. See more in How to install applications to iOS devices for further information.
